Oncologic surgery: New approaches to tumor resection

Introduction: Oncologic surgery is a recent denomination for a millenary practice. The emergence of hospitals dedicated to cancer management led to the creation of oncologic surgery departments and the separation of the general surgeon to the specialized cancer surgeon, defining the formation of this new specialty.
Development: The development addresses the background and evolution of oncologic surgery, explains the various advances in pediatric tumors and current practical applications of minimally invasive surgery, as well as breast cancer, in the elderly, head and neck. Concluding with future lines of research with respect to the subject matter addressed in the article .
Conclusions: Oncologic surgery has evolved substantially by applying innovative strategies that improve results and quality of life. Research continues, ethics and multidisciplinary collaboration are crucial to advance in the treatment of cancer.
