Introduction: Obesity is a disease of heterogeneous origin, encompassing lifestyle, associated comorbidities, environmental factors, among others. Its growth has been exponential and uncontrolled by local and international organizations. Treatment approaches include dietary, lifestyle, and pharmacological interventions. The emergence of new techniques has made bariatric surgery exceptional in obesity control, with significant benefits observed. However, clear evidence regarding its failures and shortcomings is lacking.
Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the factors determining the failure of bariatric procedures, specifically focusing on post-procedure weight regain in patients.
Methods: The Helsinki principles were adhered to. A search was conducted using major search engines and tools such as PubMed, Scopus, Redalyc, and Google Scholar.
Conclusions: Factors associated with the failure of bariatric surgery leading to weight regain after bariatric procedures were identified. These factors have already been extensively identified and studied, including in-situ surgical procedures, surgical technique, and surgical duration.
Keywords: obesity, failure, bariatric surgery, weight regain, weight.
