Congenital Radiocubital Synostosis. Case report

Introduction: congenital radioulnar synostosis is a malformation developed in early fetal life, classified as a rare condition. It consists of a heterotopic ossification of the interosseous membrane of the forearm that blocks rotational movements, considerably limiting the performance of daily activities. It has a family inheritance pattern, autosomal dominant, without sex predilection and is bilateral in 60 to 80% of cases. This case report presents a 5-year-old male patient of indigenous ethnicity who resides in the city of Sucúa, canton of the province of Morona Santiago, diagnosed with bilateral congenital radioulnar synostosis for 1 year.
General objective: to carry out an update on congenital radioulnar synostosis and report of a clinical case presented at the Basic Hospital of Sucúa.
Conclusions: congenital radioulnar synostosis is a rare disease, difficult to identify in the first years of life. Image analysis of bone fusion of the proximal ends of the ulna and radius bones by radiography or computed tomography is currently the only validated method of diagnosis. Surgical treatment is appropriate before the infant begins school life, due to the recovery and rehabilitation time that this type of surgery requires. As there is no gold standard of treatment, the patient must be treated according to the degree of disability they present.
